Day 2- BBR&BW Strangeways 2018- Thomas House B&B Part 2
Our new ghost hunting pals Ginny, Bill, (sixtyish) and their son Jeremy (late thirtiesish) went behind the reception counter and fetched the key to the church. We walked across the darkened street to a squat, windowless church of the peeling paint and leaning a little variety. When we entered, it was obvious that the building was being used as storage for rejected antiques, furniture, figurines, and toys all tumbled and jumbled on tables and in corners. The church had no electricity, so we used flashlights and phone lights so as not to break our necks. Off to the front side was a doorway that led to the restrooms and kitchen, which had no floor and a collapsed ceiling. This was purported to be the most haunted area, but we couldn’t go in due to the dangerous condition of the room.
We settled into the sanctuary area, where there was a rough rectangle cleared of junk and some chairs set up. We all sat down in the pitch black room. Grace and I got out our phones to use to record possible EVPs. The rest of our group started pulling out real ghost hunting equipment like EMF readers, temperature gauges, listening devices, and little flashlights and motion and touch activated lights. Yeah, we had, um, our phones.
An aside- never eat a heavy Southern food buffet before a ghost hunt, the stomach growling and gas bubble noises practically drowned out the EVPs.
The afore-mentioned lights started going off one after the other. We all talked out loud to the room, and asked whoever was there to light up certain lights. This worked well for about twenty minutes. Two more ladies joined the group, they seemed as unequipped as Grace and I. They were nice enough, but whispered to each other a lot, which kind of pollutes recordings for EVPs. We have a no whisper rule ourselves, but I didn’t want to be a dick and spoil their fun.
Speaking of dicks, another group of three came in, I remembered seeing them at dinner, and apparently Ginny, Bill, and Jeremy knew them. This group came in silently, and very brusquely began setting up some SERIOUS paranormal investigating equipment in a businesslike manner. When I tried to speak to them and ask them a few questions, they ignored me completely. Ginny answered the questions for me. One woman rummaged incessantly in her bag, setting up even more devices and giving a running dialogue on the state of her batteries. The vibe completely cooled down in the room. The little lights stopped lighting.
But I quickly forgave them their rudeness because they brought an SLS camera. I had been lusting after one of these for years, and have never seen one in person. For the uninitiated, here’s a description I ripped off of the internet-“The Kinect SLS Camera has an infrared light projector with a monochrome CMOS sensor that shows everything as dots arranged in 3D formation. These infrared dots allow the camera to show depth and detail. The software “sees” people by recognizing joints and movements. The IR will detect paranormal entities that the program recognizes as a human shape based on the body parts and joints.” In other words, it detects and shows entities as stick figures. They use one all the time on Ghost Adventures.
They aimed the camera at the door to the condemned room. It didn’t take long before a figure appeared. It appeared to be hovering in the door frame, and was writhing and “dancing”, very active. Some of the other investigators commented on it, then kind of ignored it. It was there for 5 minutes or more, thrashing and flailing around in that doorway. Grace made a comment that it looked like it was hanging, the stick that represented its head was bent at a downward angle, and it kept stretching one leg toward the floor. That’s when Ginny informed us of the rumor that a pastor had killed himself in the building years ago.
I recorded some of the SLS footage, but could only download a short clip to the blog- it pretty much represents what went on all that time-
Grace and I felt sorry for the poor fellow hanging around that doorway. I said out loud “It’s not real, you can put your feet down if you try”. He stayed for a few more minutes, being ignored while the new group rummaged in their bags and ignored questions, then disappeared to return no more, at least not while we were there.
After the entity left, not much happened for a while despite entreaties by the breathing occupants of the room for the spirits to light up certain lights. I remembered I had my Mini Maglite in my pocket, and set it up in front of me. For about three minutes, it would come on when I asked it to, and when Grace held it in her hand. During that time, it was the only equipment that got any results. I think maybe our hanging buddy knew who in the room was giving it attention and sympathy. And pooh-pooh to the group of three with the sophisticated equipment. Meet Grace and Kellie and their basic-ass flashlight spirit show!
Not much happened after that, and we went with our original group back to the B&B. We sat in the conference room and jawed for a while about past investigations, then Grace and I thanked them for including us and retired for the evening.
We had a good nights sleep, with no obvious paranormal events. We were greeted in the morning with a breakfast buffet just as huge as the dinner buffet, fried chicken, scrambled eggs, ham, biscuits, gravy, fried potatoes, and the most beautiful, thick-sliced tomatoes. I had to share the food porn on here, mostly because of the impressive tomato-
Annndd, because South, bread pudding with chocolate gravy. Chocolate gravy, let that phrase sink in for just a moment.
We took a photo of the church in daylight-
It even looks creepy in daylight, windowless, and pale, like a creature in a cave with no eyes that’s somehow still watching you.
With sugar-shaking frames from all the chocolate gravy, we bid the Thomas House a reluctant adieu. I’d say this is a very good place for ghost hunting, especially for novices like us. They welcome ghost hunters, and one can creep around and run any equipment one wants without fear of judgement, and with the energy of all those antiques and the history soaked into the walls and floors be almost guaranteed some spooky results.
We had fantastic food, and some good paranormal events there, and we’d go back in a heartbeat, especially if tomatoes are in season. Maybe we’ll bring back our own damned SLS next time.
