Day 2- BBR&BW Strangeways 2018- Thomas House B&B
The Thomas House B&B is located in the curiously named Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. We drove in through Kentucky back roads, and never saw the seam in the road that hurled us from the Bluegrass State to the Volunteer State, and a different time zone as well.
Thomas House, much like Shirley Jackson’s Hill House “stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within…and whatever walked there, walked alone”. Which is all true of the Thomas House, except for the walking alone part. There were several cars parked outside.-scarnon drinking societies.
At seven o’clock, (which was eight o’clock to our time-changed appetites) the Southern buffet dinner was served. When we got to the dining room, one long table was already filled with the other guests,
so we sat at another long table by ourselves (junior high cafeteria flashback!). I was kind of hoping to sit with the other guests so we could talk spookies, but there was no room at the cool kids table.
One nice gentleman did acknowledge that we existed by passing us a copy of an article from Fate Magazine about Thomas House ghost hunting. He also insisted that we be the first to approach the buffet, as it was ready and everyone was stalling so as not to be the first. My great love of Southern food overcame my shyness, and I was the first to break the crust on the excellent peach cobbler, Grace following right after. David had cooked all the food, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, squash casserole, pear chutney and the afore-mentioned cobbler. Good lawd. We stormed that castle. We were starved, and the food was delicious, even if the company was a tad cold and clickish.
We freshened up in the room after dinner, then proceeded to start ghost hunting/creeping around the house again.
As we crept downstairs, one of the guests asked us if we had been to the church. What church? My atheist sensibilities prickled. The haunted church across the street! That’s different! They were headed over to do some investigating and asked if we’d care to join. Hell yeah!
